OVERVIEW
Orangeville Hydro is one of many electricity distribution utilities who are able to provide our customers with cleaner energy options to supply their energy needs. The Green Energy Act will:

  • utilize local distribution companies like Orangeville Hydro to deliver energy conservation programs to households and businesses throughout Ontario
  • incent Ontarians to invest in renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind, hydro, biomass and biogas
  • stream-line approvals for renewable energy projects
  • introduce a Feed-in-tariff (FIT) system that provides guaranteed prices for renewable energy generation
  • provide the tools to help homeowners better manage their energy consumption
  • implement greater energy efficiency standards for existing and new buildings
  • establish greater energy efficiency standards for heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems and household appliances
  • require mandatory home energy audits prior to the sale of homes
  • reduce the amount of greenhouse gases and emissions while eliminating coal-fired generation from the power supply
  • create 'green' jobs and improve economic growth in Ontario

There are 2 initiatives under the Feed-in-Tariff Program:
MicroFIT - If you are a homeowner, farmer or small business owner, you have the opportunity to develop a very small or “micro” renewable electricity generation project (10 kilowatts or less in size) on your property.

To participate in the FIT Program, you must:

  •  be willing to make necessary investments in your project , (more than 10 kilowatts in size) including equipment, installation and construction, and to bear all operating and maintenance costs, including applicable fees and charges applied by your local electricity distribution company
  • ensure that your project meets all applicable laws, regulations and codes
  • have your project connected to your local electricity distribution system, a host facility or the IESO-controlled grid and separately metered for data collection at your expense
  • enter into a 20-year FIT contract (40 years for qualifying waterpower projects) with the OPA
  • be able to access the Internet to register your project and accept the FIT contract, and have a valid email address.
